About alan's non-writing background:

Alan grew up on a dairy farm in northern Iowa at a time when the Milky Way still blazed in the midnight sky. He began his work career at the age of four carrying oats to the hen house. He quickly moved up to pitchfork operator, a position he held until graduating from high school. Even though a dairy/swine/chicken farm demands a lot of time, Alan still managed to be 4H county co-president and a captain on his tiny high school’s football, basketball, and track teams. (To be fair, for a couple years Alan was the only member of the track team.)

Starting his career as an accountant, Alan passed the C.P.A. exam (hardest test ever) and began work as an auditor. Since then, he has amassed nearly twenty years of senior management experience beginning at the age of twenty-six when he took over the corporate controller duties of Hubbard Milling Company, a $200+ million diversified agricultural company. Alan has held top financial and operational management positions in five startups, including Citrix Systems, Inc. and HBS International. Alan currently serves as an officer and board member of another high-tech startup. He has done volunteer work and/or served on local boards for organizations such as the Salvation Army, the United Way, and the United Methodist Church. He is a Katherine Ordway Associate of The Nature Conservancy, a Bush Leadership Fellow, holds an A.A. from North Iowa Area Community College, a B.S. from Minnesota State University, Mankato, and an M.B.A. from Stanford University.
